Serving Communities Across India

Launched in 2018, Project Rise is rooted in the values of service, compassion and a commitment to uplift the deserving and to care for the world we share.

For the Dawoodi Bohras, this initiative is the manifestation of Syedna's emphasis to be a force of good in society. Keeping this in mind, Bohra communities across the country have mobilised under Project Rise to address the most pressing needs of their fellow citizens.
From tribal talukas in Maharashtra to drought-affected villages in Rajasthan, from the beaches of Mumbai to the hills of Matheran, Project Rise volunteers have been actively contributing for the benefit of their local communities. Its work aligns with national priorities such as the Jal Jeevan Mission, Poshan Abhiyaan and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, among many, reflecting a shared vision of an equitable and thriving nation.

Project Rise in India is more than an initiative. It is a pledge to stand with local communities and to serve with humility and compassion.

“All of Creation is a family dependent upon Allah. Therefore the most beloved of Creation to Him is the one who benefits His family the most.”

- Prophet Mohammed ﷺ

Expanding rural healthcase in rajasthan

In December 2024, Project Rise began a new partnership with Basic Health Services (BHS) to support the AMRIT Clinic in Rawachh, a tribal village in southern Rajasthan. The region has one of the lowest human development scores in the state and faces high rates of malnutrition, maternal health risks, and Tuberculosis (TB). The clinic, which already serves 1,200+ patients a day, provides primary care, immunisation, maternal and child health services, and TB treatment. With Project Rise support, the clinic has strengthened its capacity to reach more families with affordable, dignified care. Local Dawoodi Bohra volunteers and doctors from Udaipur will also assist through counselling sessions and community medical camps. This marks Project Rise’s first long-term healthcare programme in the Udaipur region, building on earlier work in food security, environment, and education.

Beating the heat a summer of service

As temperatures soared during India’s 2025 summer, volunteers distributed refreshing beverages across 13 cities and towns, including Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Erode. A team of 225 volunteers served nearly 30,000 beverages of nimbu pani (lemonade), buttermilk, and rose water to commuters, labourers, police personnel, and delivery workers. Eco-friendly roadside stalls and mobile teams helped reach people working outdoors in extreme heat.

Aiming for zero hunger

Throughout the year, the Project Rise’s Zero Hunger Squad (ZHS) scaled its mission to eliminate food insecurity. From bustling metros to rural towns, volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure that nutrition reached the most vulnerable segments of society. Continuing this mission in Tamil Nadu, volunteers in Chennai and Coimbatore maintained a relentless pace. In Chennai, the squad focused on daily meal distributions near government hospitals, providing a lifeline for thousands of out-of-town patients and their families. Meanwhile, Coimbatore’s teams complemented this by organising weekly drives that targeted urban homeless populations, ensuring consistent access to hot, balanced meals. In Maharashtra, efforts in Nashik and Sangamner saw volunteers serve cooked meals to the less fortunate and provide essential hydration to outdoor labourers during the peak of summer. Meanwhile, in Porbandar and Jamnagar in Gujarat, the squad reached deep into rural areas, delivering essential food kits and cooked meals to families facing economic hardship.

Restoring habitats one feeder at a time

In Kolkata, volunteers continued a multi-year initiative to support urban bird life. Since 2022, more than 7,500 bird feeders and nests have been installed across the city in partnership with Raj Bhavan, Fort William, Army Headquarters Bengal Sub Area, and Indian Naval Ship Netaji Subhash. A recent drive distributed 5,300 feeders to households, encouraging families to participate in local biodiversity protection. The effort is led by over 40 volunteers and supported by Burhani Foundation, the Dawoodi Bohra community’s environmental trust dedicated to furthering environmental awareness and research.

Environment & Sustainability

Dawoodi Bohra communities across India are active custodians of their local environments — from the coastlines of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh to the forests and rivers of the interior.

In Mumbai, volunteers have regularly joined UN Champion of the Earth Afroz Shah for weekly clean ups at Versova beach. Sparrow conservation drives have been launched across urban India, addressing the quiet but urgent disappearance of the house sparrow — a species whose decline signals wider ecological stress. On World Cleanup Day, volunteers rally in cities across the country as part of a coordinated national effort.

Food Security

The Prophet Mohammed ﷺ taught that feeding another person is among the highest acts of worship. In India, Project Rise volunteers act in accordance with the prophetic tradition through sustained and structured interventions to tackle food insecurity.

In Chandrapur's Jiwati taluka, a region with a significant tribal population, Project Rise partnered with the Association for Nutrition and Development Action (ANNADA) and the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Commissionerate to provide daily supplementary nutrition — fortified ladoos, peanut jaggery ladoos, and khichdi mixes — to undernourished mothers and children across 27 Anganwadi Centres. This builds on similar programmes in Mokhada, Govandi, Roha, and Nandurbar.

When the Chennai floods struck, Bohras were among the first to mobilise, distributing hot meals and grocery packets in Vyasarpadi. In Coimbatore and Sangamner, the 'Zero Hunger Squad' has brought sustained relief to communities facing chronic food insecurity, and during the summer months, communities stepped up with 'Beat the Heat' campaigns distributing refreshments to daily-wage labourers and those most exposed to the heat.
Our Work
  • Supplementary nutrition programmes in tribal and underserved talukas, aligned with Poshan Abhiyaan.
  • Emergency food relief during floods, droughts, and other natural calamities.
  • Food distribution to daily-wage workers and vulnerable families during extreme heat events.
  • Partnership with NGOs to address systemic malnutrition at the taluka level.

Healthcare & Well-Being

Project Rise healthcare efforts in India are built on a conviction that geography and poverty must never determine who receives care.

In the remote village of Rawachh, Rajasthan, where the nearest hospital is a 90-minute drive away, Project Rise partnered with Basic Health Services to support the AMRIT Clinic, which now serves nearly 90,000 people. This partnership has enabled residents to diagnose chronic ailments and conduct mental health consultations in their local settings, thereby making consultations more affordable and accessible in a local setting. During his travels to remote towns and villages across the country, our community leader His Holiness , Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin has personally contributed state-of-the-art medical equipment to government hospitals in Narmadapuram, Sunel, Pratapgarh, Jaora, Rajkot, Gondal, and Bhinder.
Our Work
  • Free health camps offering multispecialty consultations in rural and tribal areas
  • Partnership with AMRIT Clinic to provide primary, maternal, and mental health care in remote Rajasthan
  • Donation of critical medical equipment including ventilators, diagnostic machines and C-arm units  to government hospitals
  • Telepsychiatry and mental health support for underserved rural communities

Water & Sanitation

In India, where intensifying heat waves and changing weather patterns sometimes lead to millions without reliable access to clean water, Project Rise teams have been working closely with local communities, Gram Panchayats, and water management organisations to address acute water shortages.

In Maharashtra, Project Rise collaborated with the Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR) to install hand pumps in 12 water-stressed villages near Nashik, bringing clean water within reach of over 800 families and 4,500 people. In Purushwadi village of Akole, hand pumps now serve both families and the local school. In drought-stricken Yavatmal, the initiative provided relief to farmers weathering some of the most severe water scarcity the region has known. In Palghar, sanitation infrastructure was strengthened to protect communities from waterborne disease.
Our Work
  • Hand pump installation in water-stressed villages.
  • Community-led groundwater assessment and site selection in partnership with WOTR.
  • Drought relief support for farming communities in Yavatmal and surrounding areas.
  • Sanitation facility construction and hygiene awareness in underserved panchayats.

Education

Project Rise education initiatives in India are built on the belief that every child regardless of ability, income, or address deserves the tools to learn and to grow.

In Malegaon, 40 computers were donated to five Malegaon Municipal Corporation schools which will benefit approximately 3,500 students.
In Sanjay Colony, one of Delhi's underserved urban settlements, a Project Rise Early Childhood Care and Development Centre was launched to support children in their most formative years. In Rajkot, 7,200 government school students across more than 100 schools received sweaters through the 'Warmth for Children' initiative. In Ahmedabad, the community deepened its longstanding partnership with Deepalaya to open a new Early Childhood Care Centre, reaching the youngest and most vulnerable.
Our Work
  • Donation of computers, digital boards, and Braille-enabled technology to government and municipal schools
  • Early childhood care and development centres in urban slums and underserved localities
  • Distribution of school supplies, winter wear, and essential educational resources

Women's Empowerment

Islam honours the dignity and potential of women in society. In India, Project Rise initiatives recognise that empowering women is not a standalone act but is the thread that runs through every other area of impact. From the nutrition programmes that put health knowledge in the hands of mothers, to the water projects that save women hours of daily labour, to the skills training and livelihood support offered through partner organisations, Project Rise in India is committed to ensuring that women are not merely beneficiaries but agents of change.
Our Work
  • Skills training and livelihood support for women in partnership with established NGOs
  • Nutrition and health education programmes for mothers through Anganwadi networks
  • Recognition and support for women-led community welfare initiatives
  • Women's wellness and awareness campaigns in partnership with local authorities

Testimonials

It has been a pleasure to collaborate with the Dawoodi Bohra community in training professional geriatric caregivers. Our shared vision is to build a strong and dedicated cadre for home-based senior care. This is a challenging but crucial mission, and we value partners who understand both the urgency and importance of creating sustainable solutions.
