As articulated by Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin during the centenary celebrations of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), in his capacity as Chancellor, "The very purpose of education within the Islamic tradition is to put what one knows into practice and derive innovative solutions to local and global challenges, thereby benefiting the societies within which we live."

Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin’s predecessors, Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin and Syedna Taher Saifuddin, also held the Chancellorship of AMU, testament to their visionary leadership and commitment to education.

As a result, the majority of Dawoodi Bohra members are generally well educated, and contribute their skills across various fields in India, from medicine, engineering, technology, to the arts and home businesses.

Beginning their commercial and mercantile ventures in textiles, hardware, construction, and overseas maritime trade, the Dawoodi Bohra community in India now encompasses professionals in the fields of healthcare, IT, education, and others. Many Indian Bohras have also moved into industry and manufacturing over the last decade, benefitting from national development policies.

Bohra women run their own successful enterprises across the country in diverse fields from gourmet, jewellery, home-based chefs, to doctors, lawyers and nutritionists.

With a legacy spanning centuries in the subcontinent, and under the leadership of various Dais, members of the Dawoodi Bohra community have taken part in development initiatives and worked with the government on various welfare projects, all with the aim of fostering progress within the nation.

A gracious act of patriotism undertaken by the 51st Dai, Syedna Taher Saifuddin, was the dedication of his Dandi bungalow, Saifee Villa, to the nation. It was where Mahatma Gandhi rested during the historic salt satyagraha on April 6, 1930. His Holiness presented it to Prime Minister Nehru in 1961, stating it ‘ought properly to belong to the whole nation rather than to a community.’
